Finders Keepers – Love stories from the Goldfields

We’re all about love here at We Love KB, we love the lifestyle, our beautiful landscape, the business opportunities, our vibrant community and for some of us, we’ve fallen in love here too.

Blame it on those Kalgoorlie sunsets

For some people, Kalgoorlie Boulder was meant to be a short affair, a placement for work or a stop through on the way to Perth or the Eastern states. How many times have you heard;

“I came for a year but met someone, we’ve now got 2 or 3 kids and a house”?

“I didn’t know anyone when I moved here but now I’m surrounded by friends and my family came to join me”?

“I thought I would hate it here but it’s amazing the opportunities I’ve had and the support I get from our community”?

Meeting people at ‘Orphan Christmases’, workplaces, sporting teams and social hotspots (i.e: The Gold Bar) we’re noticing that many people who were either born in Kalgoorlie Boulder or came for employment have found not only love with others but just like us have grown in a supportive environment and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.

This February in true celebration of Valentine’s Day, We Love KB are going to shine a spotlight on the lovers of the Goldfields in an article titled, “Finders Keepers, love stories from the Goldfields”.

Whether it’s the love of  your life, the tale of how your grandparents met or how you’ve flourished as an individual living in Kalgoorlie Boulder we’d love to feature your story!

Share the highlights of your experience in a message to us and we’ll send around a photographer and writer to get the goss on your Goldfields love story.

  • Earlier this year, we asked you “What do you love about living in Kalgoorlie Boulder?” for our LOVE Exhibition. We got some great responses ranging from the beautiful weather, the ‘family feel’ of our community, opportunities for business and of course, Gold!

But, like, hey, nobody asked us! So read on to view what our small team at We Love KB have been crushing on in the past 12 months in Kalgoorlie Boulder…

  • Sunset Pop Up Markets

The inaugural market was held at Hammond Park in February and was the starter platform for the We Love KB ‘Love Exhibition’.

Market organisers Danielle and Ashlee did a fabulous job of bringing together local artisans & handicrafters to a central location. The night was such a hit the girls came back for another round in November, held at the beautiful Twin Dams Rotary Peace Park.

  • The Growing KB Futures Forum

As part of the Growing KB Regional Development framework (set to be released in 2017) our City was treated to a day of thought provoking and challenging speakers who excel in their fields.

Attended by over 100 KB lovers and fringe dwellers (greater Goldfields shires and business owners) this part conference/part workshop was the beginning of many conversations about what Kalgoorlie Boulder will look like in the future and how we can play a part in shaping it.

Oh, and um, *blush* we got to meet Christopher Saunders, Managing Director of Renew Newcastle – a now national initiative which activates retail spaces via rolling 30 day leases.

  • We love meeting new people.

And there’s no better way than throwing a party!

This year to launch the We Love KB website and lifestyle blog we got together with the Goldfields Professionals Network at the Hannans Club and invited our current supporters and local business people to say hello and learn a little more about we do!

Major highlight of the night? Playing ‘Networking Bingo’ – you should try it at your next event!

Not sure how to play? Send us a message

  • Women in Business Forum

Held at the Kalgoorlie Town Hall, this full day forum included inspirational speeches from women in leadership roles in Kalgoorlie Boulder and from around the country.

Attendees were quick to thank organisers, The Kalgoorlie Boulder Chamber of  Commerce & Industry, for providing a safe, supporting and fun forum.

A highlight of the day was keynote speaker Turia Pitt, who in 2011 suffered burns to 65% of her body and has now gone on to achieve Iron(WO)man status for her athleticism and is an ambassador for Interplast.

Keen to attend in 2017? Contact the KBCCI for more info

  • Fossick Handmade Crafternoon Teas

Typically held on a Sunday, these popular events are for people of ages and different skill sets. Crafters meet in the retro-chic Fossick Handmade workshop space on Egan St to learn about multiple craft from easy peasy to crochet superstar.

Please don’t think this is a daggy  past time cos’ your Nan used to knit. We’re overwhelmed at the friendships that are struck up in this space. It’s inclusive, reasonably priced and a pleasant way to learn a new skill.

Crafternoon teas are on hiatus until early 2017. Best to follow Fossick’s FB page for more 2017 dates.

  • Kalgoorlie Fashion Week

Held in multiple venues across Kalgoorlie Boulder in August, this iconic and inaugural event was spectacular!

We were proud as punch to document this week long festival and love the opportunity to showcase not only local designers but retail stores, hair and beauty professionals and entertainers.

It also inspired this article celebrating local photographers and models against stunning Goldfields backdrops.

  • Souper Pitch

Step 1. Pay $10 receive soup & bread.

Step 2. Listen to 3 pitches by locals looking to get funding to get their project off the ground.

Step 3. Allocate your $10 (or more) to one or more projects that you would like to see supported.

Step 4. Revel in the love of community and spectacular support that these projects have received. So far, we’ve witnessed get off the ground:

The Kalgoorlie Boulder Community Garden, Heartwalk – a 2yr public art project, Eleven13 Records – our very own record company and gig guide, Game Jam – a video game challenge for youth, a retreat for young women, a support group for women of menopausal age, a support group for couples trying to conceive and a historical book telling the stories of the Race Riots of 1934.

We get goosebumps whenever we talk about it. Keen to see this grassroots event come back? Send us an EOI and we’ll forward it on – word is, Souper Pitch will come back in March 2017!

  • Artgold’s ‘Heart of Gold’ Festival

What’s not to love? From it’s launch at the Boulder Market Day in May through to it’s final act, this week long celebration is fast becoming KB’s most popular event.

Satellite workshops, exhibitions and entertainment puts art & culture in the spotlight all over Kalgoorlie Boulder.

In 2016 there were more than 50 program events! We particularly enjoyed the buskers on launch day, the Boodjar Bidi dancers, the Crash Test Dummies, the Outback Pub tours and of course, our own LOVE exhibition!

Heart of Gold festival will be back from May 21 – 28 in 2017.

  • WAM Sounds of the Goldfields

Okay, so coupled with the Artgold Heart of Gold festival, maybe it was just the month of May itself that we loved.

And what a musical month it was! Culminating months of songwriting and recording work, the WAM Sounds of the Goldfields launch, held at the Goldfields Arts Centre was an absolute cracker of a night.

10 Goldfields artists had the opportunity to record their own material, mentored by Eskimo Joe’s Joel Quatermain, and on the launch night over 800 copies of the CD went home with avid music lovers.

You can listen to the CD for free via this link. You’ll hear a range of tunes from gospel to urban, instrumental and country. You’ll love it and you’ll love what’s being created by local talented musicians.

  • NAIDOC Week 2016

Delicious food from Fervor aside, this year’s NAIDOC celebrations were just fab.

This collaborative event, organised by just a handful of Goldfielders, included a Market Day, live entertainment, a multiple course dinner by Fervor and performance by Archie Roach.

In the weeks prior to NAIDOC up to 30 young Goldfielders were taught a traditional dance by choreographer Michael Leslie. The Gulliah Tjookorr or the Emu Dreaming dance was performed in front of 300 people and was the first time a lot of these young people had even been on a stage!

We are thoroughly looking forward to next year’s event and would like to congratulate all of the organisers, performers and artists who contributed.

  • Pets Day Out

If you haven’t guessed already, we love getting out and about in our community.

We also love the opportunity for our furry, feathered and fluffy friends to get out too!

This year’s Pets Day Out, organised by the City of Kalgoorlie Boulder, was also an excuse to showcase the famous pet-lebrities that live in KB and have a massive fan following online.

  • 2016 Kalgoorlie Boulder Race Round

You were waiting for this right?

It’s Australia’s Biggest Party and we found ourselves a little overwhelmed with joy at the efforts put in by the Kalgoorlie Boulder Racing Club and local fashion retailers to ensure that we were delightfully dressed and enjoyed the week.

Collaborations are a fave of ours, check out this article for Spring Styling and if you’re nostalgic, this piece on racewear of the yesteryear.

Racing begins Saturday the 8th of April 2017. You can already book tickets for next season!

  • Kalgoorlie Boulder Pure Gold Visitor Centre

Wow! The team at the visitor centre are constantly on the ball when it comes to promoting our region and attractions. They’re also the team behind our biggest photography competition ‘Pure Gold Moments’. Over 500 entries this year!

We’d like to congratulate the team on their recent accolades and awards including winning the GWN7 Top Tourism Town Award for Heritage, Cultural & Environmental Visitor Experiences and for taking out Bronze in the Perth Airport Tourism Awards for the Visitor Servicing & Information Category.

Organisations such as theirs, the Goldfields Tourism Network and Australia’s Golden Outback are forever doing us proud in promoting our unique region.

If you’re looking for up to date info about what’s on in Kalgoorlie Boulder please pop in to see the experienced team at their shop and visitor centre at the Kalgoorlie Town Hall.

  • Heartwalk Launch

Speaking of opportunities for tourism and boosting our cities profile we cannot go past the launch of Heartwalk.

Love child of Paula Fletcher and modelled on the successful Bunbury public arts trail, Heartwalk is a two year program where artists will activate spaces, walls and shopfronts to create an open air exhibit never seen before in KB.

Funding for this program begin with a small amount gifted from the comunity at Souper Pitch and has since been granted nearly $250,000 by the City of Kalgoorlie Boulder and the Goldfields Esperance Development Commission.

The launch, held at Black Crow Studios laneway, was a night of live art, live music and tasty Tex Mex tacos and Thai food.

Heartwalk will commence on May 1st 2017.

  • Lighting of the Christmas Tree and St. Barbs Festival

Every year the welcoming of the festive season and celebration of patron saint of mining, St. Barbara, just gets bigger and better!

No other place in Australia can you see such a display of big mining equipment roll down the main street. It’s estimated that this year, collectively, the value of machinery was $28 million!

This year’s highlights were the Open Day at the Museum of the Goldfields, the Lighting of the Christmas Tree Street Party (and fireworks!) and in addition to the dump truck, we also loved the introduction of the zip lining mines rescue team doing their thing across Hannan Street from the clock tower to the roof of Lot 35 restaurant.

    Never a dull moment!

  • We Love KB Members and Supporters!

We love you all! We’ve just recently put out word that we’re taking bookings for the 4th edition of the We Love KB cultural & retail map and the response has been great. We’re touched, we really are ♥

Our goal is to promote and celebrate local businesses, community organisations and events and without our fantastic We♥KB community we couldn’t create the map, lifestyle blog or content that we do – so we’re mega grateful.

We’re also super excited that shortly we’ll begin our Summer Spending Spree giveaway, announce our Goldfields Love Story feature and report back on the success of shopping loKal this Christmas!

From the team at We♥KB, Happy New Year! May your 2017 be prosperous and bright.
