How many people can say they met the love of their lives at just 16?

Communications expert Jesica McKenzie met Jonty Cavazzi when she was camping “as you do when you’re teenagers” just out near Lake Douglas. “Like any 16-year-old, I just thought, oh, he’s pretty hot!,” she says.

“I  thought he was really sweet, it was the first time I’d met him, he just seemed really interesting, and he was already working as a carpenter at that stage. He’s just a year older than I am, but he’d got an apprenticeship and started working, so that was pretty attractive, that he knew what he wanted in life and had a bit of direction.

“When I met him, I was already organised to go on a trip overseas, for Rotary, it was kind of understood that I was already organised to go. I went and lived in France for a year, and when I moved back to Australia, we moved to Perth together.”

After a few years, the pair made the life-altering decision to move back to the Goldfields. “We moved back to Kalgoorlie because it’s home,” she says.

“I’d hesitated because of the industry that I’m in (Jesica owns communications agency Brand L’or) but I think Kalgoorlie offers lots of opportunities. As a young couple we’ve managed to get ahead quite quickly, thanks to living in Kalgoorlie.

“We are saving at the moment, we’ve just bought our first house, we’ve got plans to do a little bit of travel around Australia, and finish setting up some businesses up here.

The couple have now been together eight years, and Jesica laughs when she’s asked their future plans.

“Hopefully one day soon, he’s going to ask me to marry him!”

It was there she met her now-husband, not at the pub, but when reporting at a local council meeting.  When she’s not interviewing couples about how they met, Georgia enjoys lipstick, knitting and chihuahuas.
