A simple kiss in the snow eight years ago marked the start of Joanne and Jonathan Slattery’s love story.
The entrepreneurial pair met 10 years ago, as university students in Ireland, long before they made the epic move across the world to the red dirt of the Goldfields.
Joanne remembers the night their friendship grew into love.
“Just before Christmas we were out with friends and we seemed to spend the whole night just talking and taking notice of nobody else,” she says.
“We ended up having a little kiss in the snow which sounds super cheesy and romantic, and we’ve been together ever since!
Joanne and Jonathan moved from Ireland to Western Australia in 2010, and settled in Kalgoorlie a year later, where they own two business, Lola’s Boutique (262 Hannan Street) and Thairapy Hair and Beauty Salon (2-241 Hannan Street). The couple also have day jobs; Jonathan is the regional lead for Brookfield Rail in the Goldfields and Joanne works in real estate sales at Kalgoorlie Metro.
The busy pair also found time to organise a wedding on the other side of the world, getting married in Ireland 19 months ago.
Joanne says the couple love living in Kalgoorlie. “The small town feel and sense of community is similar to that of what we grew up with in Ireland so it’s very homely for us. The sense of community is great and we have come to be involved in Boulder City Soccer Club with Jonathan being the current president.
“We have met so many friends here and that has always been the deciding factor in why we choose to stay here. Even if some of them have since moved on, we have found friends for life.”
