The first week of May welcomed the inaugural Heartwalk festival. A two year public art project set to invigorate the central business district of Kalgoorlie.
You’d have to be living under a rock not to have noticed the flurry of artistic activity happening in the Kalgoorlie CBD lately. There’s people painting windows, children weaving hearts onto chain link fences and some artists, visiting from around the world, are up on scissor lifts adorning some big walls with their amazing images. Maps are now available at the Kalgoorlie Boulder Visitor Centre and retailers.
This is Heartwalk and it’s not too late to get involved and show your support for what has become Kalgoorlie’s biggest ever public art project.
What’s on in Kalgoorlie this Saturday the 6th of May:
Suitable for all ages the Community Colouring-In Mural, designed by local artist Emily Uberuaga, is your opportunity to leave your mark by colouring in between the lines of Emily’s zentangle mural. Beginning at 10am outside the old Leading Edge store at 239 Hannan Street you can add your flair up to 12 noon.
Fancy a walk? Guided Walking Tours depart from 3pm at St. Barbara’s Square. The tour is approximately 2 hours long and covers a 3 kilometre loop around the CBD visiting all of the murals and includes a quick chat by the visiting wall mural artists.
Want to help celebrate the end of a mega-week and let your hair down? The Market Arcade Wrap Party is for you (but sorry, not for anyone under 18). The Heartwalk team are taking over the market arcade on Hannan Street, you know the one where you walk through to Coles? It’s going to be transformed and will include; a pop-up bar from the crew at Beaten Track Brewery, a food court style eatery by the Lunchbowl, live entertainment and a quick style salon by the lovely ladies at Shear Vanity hairdressers.
Actually, that’s not even all, finishing up the night is Tomas Ford, the crappiest DJ you’ll ever hear. He takes requests but they’ve got to be bad. They’ll be songs you know the words to, maybe even the moves to and his high energy performance will keep us on our feet until close.
Just so you’re aware, all of the happenings in the Market Arcade (or #PartyCade as some hipsters are trying to promote) are FREE. You’ll only need dollars for the bar and food.
What you can spend your money on is a tribute to local music, movie making and comedy performances which will be presented in the St. Barb’s Courtyard behind the Market Arcade. There’s a passionate crew which include E13 Sessions, The Comedy Emporium and Zach Inglis, that have been working behind the scenes to bring us a showcase of talent and mate, it’s cheap entry.
For only $35 for an all access pass, this could possibly be the best night you’ve had all year – we’re calling it!

All over social media we’ve seen pics and tales supporting this fab event. It’s bringing colour to the streets and a smile to our faces.
