You’ll go soapy for Lizzy’s Soap Opera

Welcome to the July issue of our ‘Member of the Month’ blog, to show our appreciation by recognising our amazing business members, who they are and what they have to offer. This month we are focusing on Lizzy’s Soap Opera, a locally owned and operated business on our historic Burt Street in Boulder, since 2018!

I got a chance to speak with Liz O’Donnell, the face and owner of Lizzy’s Soap Opera, to discuss her take on small business in the Goldfields, and what may be in store for the future…

Lizzy’s Soap Opera came from humble beginnings. When Liz moved back to Australia in 2014, herself and husband bought an old house in Piccadilly containing a roll top bath. Not having anywhere to purchase quality bath products at the time, Liz tried her hand at her own creations. “I had a go at making some bath bombs for myself. Turns out, I had a bit of a knack for it and I really enjoyed making them. Family and friends loved them, and my husband suggested I start selling them.”

Liz began her journey selling ‘Lizzy’s Fizzy’s’, her own handcrafted bath bombs at Boulder Market Day back in February of 2015. As Liz began her mission to research and proactively create new products, and with some patience, the decision to open a shop front in 2018 turned her reality into her own ‘dream business’.

Liz runs the store independently, describing the premises as ‘a sensory delight packed with lots of gorgeous gift ideas and treats for the bath and body’.

Liz says that her best form of advertising has been through social media, however she adds: “Recently, I have been advertising on the radio and it has brought more customers in, which they all give feedback about it!”

She goes on to note from her personal experiences that although she’s no business expert; determination, hard work, low overheads and loving what you do have been the most vital steps for her in terms of creating a successful business.

Being such a unique store, Liz finds she doesn’t have many competitors, however there are other factors that make operating a business in a regional city difficult. “Kalgoorlie presents a few different challenges, like social issues and freight costs. Worrying about continuing to be viable is a disadvantage of being in business.”

Her great challenge so far has been setting up the shop itself. It was a trying effort as she was not only doing it on her own, Liz also sadly lost her mother around this time and had to jet back to New South Wales. Although, the positives have outweigh the negatives for Lizzy’s Soap Opera.  Liz comments on the greater moments in her business ventures, like being your own boss and being able to give back to the community, “There have been heaps of donations from the shop of gift hampers, that are either raffled off to raise money for organisations or as a prize.”

The most exciting part of the business for Liz has been seeing the reaction of customers. “Seeing the look of excitement and wonder when customers come into the shop for the first time.”

We wanted to know the future for Lizzy’s Soap Opera, so we asked Liz: Where do you see the business in another 5 years time?
“It’s hard to forecast if I will still be in the shop on Burt Street in 5 years’ time as my husband’s future employment determines whether we will remain in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. In a different location, I would continue to make and sell my soaps and bath products, but in what capacity is unknown for now.”
