Month of the Mo: Movember 2020

It is that time of year again! Moustaches will be popping up left right and centre for this year’s Movember campaign. Will you be growing out your mo’ for a good cause?

The Movember Foundation is an Australia-based charity, aiming to “change the face of men’s health”, by hosting their annual November event to raise vital funds and awareness on men’s health issues.

Men are dying on average six years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons.

Mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer are the key issues needing preventative funding from the organisation.

Since it was founded in 2003, the Movember Foundation has helped fund over 1250 projects related to men’s health. Their aim is to challenge the status quo, to get people talking and transforming the way health services reach and support Australian men.

Almost 10 million men globally are facing a prostate cancer diagnosis. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men, estimated to be around 575,000 men currently living with or having lived previously with the disease.

Without prevention now, unchecked prostate cancer rates will double over the next 15 years. Globally, one man dies by suicide every minute, with males accounting for 75% of deaths by suicide. Testicular cancer remains the most common cancer among men aged 15-39 years of age.

In 2019 alone, Movember raised a collective total of $34 million dollars in Australia. So what does this mean for our future as a community?

Half as many men will suffer serious side effects and avoid premature death from prostate and testicular cancers, as funds are distributed to encourage early screenings and prevention measures for the disease.

With men feeling mentally healthy, there will be a predicted 25% reduction in the rate of male suicide.

There are multiple ways to get involved with the cause this November. Raise funds for men’s health with your very own homegrown mo’, or, if that’s not for you, check out a few other options for the month of November

Take part in Move for Movember, a 60km race for the 60 men lost to suicide each hour globally. Or host your very own Mo-ment, because it’s all about having a good time for a good cause!
